It is the Season

It is the Season – To worry about things, we cannot control, nor that may even have much effect on our day-to-day life!

The political season is just starting. Everybody knows who they hate and mistrust; no matter what they say, we do not believe them. Unfortunately for many of us, we have split into groups that point the finger at each other and believe the previous sentence is true about the other group.

There are many aspects to talk about in financial planning. The most productive ones are ones we can control, bringing the probability of success to our plan and mitigating the risk of failure.

But politics! I have so many clients who love to talk about politics; some on the right, some on the left, but so many love to talk. It is funny because it gets your blood pressure up 20 points and cuts two years off your life expectancy. But to what avail? Yes, I believe in voting, but will my vote change my world? No!

What will change my world is having a cheerful outlook living each day as though I can change the world with the things, I do for the people I touch or are around. I need to exercise to be healthy, as can be, with the body God has given. I need to practice happy thoughts, eating better, and moving more. But so many people will sit in front of the TV, worry more, eat more because they are nervous, and exercise less because they have no time to do anything but worry and fret.

I challenge you this political season to stay positive and look at the beautiful things, people, and opportunities you have in your life. We all struggle. None of our lives are perfect, and life is not fair from a human perspective. But we have so much to be happy for, content with, and look forward to. Now, some of you have tarred and feathered this letter because you know I’m just being ridiculous. I feel sorry for you!

But for those who see a glimmer of hope of being happier, healthier, and emotionally more content. Let’s strive to focus less on the political season and more on the beauty around us and our opportunities in this country.

If you don’t believe the gist of this letter, you should travel to where 80% of the world lives and walk in their shoes for a year. Or, more simply, make a habit of at least once a week walking in the forest, desert, or wherever you find yourself, but out in nature. I believe you will be happier, healthier, and a better community member!

Let’s skip this season of worry and fret!

Sincerely,

WAYNE VON BORSTEL, CFP®, MSFS, ChFC®, CLU®
